What can you recycle in Nairobi? and Where?

Dive in and find out

1. Electronic Waste at WEEE Centre

How many damaged electric cables and earphones do you have lying around in the house? Rather than bin them, why not give them a new home and purpose. From large items such as fridges to the tiniest of items like your ancient mobile phone, WEEE Centre has you covered. You can either fill their online form with your specific requirements or drop off your minimal waste at one of their boxes throughout the city.

2. Plastic Containers, Paper and Paper Catron, PET (Plastic Bottles), Metals (Aluminum Cans)

What do you do with that soda can you just drank out of? What about the plastic bottle or that paper bag with a gaping hole? Instead of throwing them in your everyday general waste bin, why not look out for TakaTaka solutions. You can find their boxes around the city as well as contact them for more information on commercial and residential collections. Through their website you can see how their waste is being recycled and repurposed into compost, and even through partnerships items like desks for local schools.

3. Clothes, textiles and fabrics

Do you have footwear and clothing that have seen better days? If you're not wearing them, why not recycle them; the same goes for fabrics around your house and items as big as mattresses. Africa Collect Textiles makes new products out of our recycled items; You can recycle: Bedding, Trousers, Duvet covers, Blankets, Sheets, Underwear, Caps, Cleaning cloths, Pajamas, Belts, Skirts, Curtains, Towels, Shirts, Jacket, Napkins, Scarves, Socks, Ties, Tablecloths, Bags, T-shirts, Cardigans, Vitrage, Swimwear, Dresses, Stockings, Pillowcases, Sweaters, Tea towels, and Shoes/pair tied together. Like the other companies, Africa Collect Textiles also have donation boxes. If you do have bulk Items you can contact them about a pick up.

Have you used any of these companies?

Do you know others that have recycling schemes for basic household waste (e.g. glass)?

I would love to hear from you

PS. Always remember to clean whatever you are recycling. Remember one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch.
